Candidates must get statements in
An offer for candidates in the April election to publish a 250-word election statement, accompanied by a photo, free of charge will expire with the March 13, 2014, issue of the Miller County Autogram-Sentinel. Deadline to get the statements was set for March 6 but statements received by Tuesday, March 11, can be included provided there is enough room in the newspaper.
Press conference on standoff with Scott Peoples
Miller County Sheriff William "Bill" Abbott and Capt. Louie Gregoire held a press conference Thursday evening to recount the events of Wednesday, March 5, leading up to the arrest of Scott Peoples on charges of kidnapping, forcible sodomy, forcible rape, domestic assault, armed criminal action and burglary. People was taken into custody Wednesday afternoon, after a six-hour standoff at a house on Atchinson Road near Eugene.

Lincoln Day Sunday, March 9 in Tuscumbia
The 76th annual Miller County Lincoln Day Banquet is at 1 p.m. this Sunday, March 9, in the Tuscumbia school gymnasium. Besides the meal, various county, state and federal candidates will address the group.

The concession stand at in the St. Elizabeth School gym was destroyed by fire overnight and the rest of the building, which includes the cafeteria and kitchen, were damaged by soot and water.

Miller County sales tax collections took a big hit in February, perhaps because of snow and frigid weather.

Bidding for the “safe room” at Iberia Schools likely will take place in April according to Steve Telscher of Sapp Design Associates. He spoke to the board last Thursday night, Feb. 27, about progress on the project.

Time to spring forward
If you find yourself tired in the mornings, you won't likely get caught up on that sleep this weekend, as it's time to “spring forward.” Daylight Savings Time starts Sunday, March 9, and runs through Saturday, Nov. 1. The time change actually occurs at 2 a.m. Sunday, and residents are reminded to set their clocks AHEAD one hour before going to sleep Saturday night.
